Would it be possible to send customers an automatic pre-notification of a direct debit? For example, a few days before the amount is debited. This can be done in a personal and professional style, such as:

Dear [Name],
The monthly direct debit of [Amount] for your subscription at FITsociety will be debited from your account shortly. This will happen on [Date]. Do you have any questions? Let us know!
